CRICKET 2008 – JDF OFF ON A WINNING STREAK
The Jamaica Defence Force began the 2008 Junior Cup Competition with a winning streak. The JDF, after finishing second last year, is determined to take back the title they last won in 2006, when they were not only Corporate Area champions but All-Island champions. Under the leadership of Private Ellington O, the team has won two games from as many starts.
The JDF played the first game against the Jamaica Fire Brigade and, as was the case last year, whatever fury the Firemen had was quickly quelled. Jamaica Fire Brigade batting first was quickly bowled out for a paltry 76 runs. Main destroyer for the JDF was the evergreen forty-plus year old Private Brown M who had bowling figures of 7 overs, 1 maiden, 12 runs and 5ive wickets. He was ably supported by Private Johnson I, who took 3 wickets for 10 runs from his 3.3 overs.
The JDF, in their turn at bat, compiled 269 runs for the loss of five wickets. The main run scorers for the JDF were Private Wallace M with his maiden century 107, the ever reliable Private. Harris A with 32 and a quick-fire 42 runs from just 18 balls from Private Scott S. With a lead of 193 the JDF declared and the Firemen were invited to take second strike.
While faring better the second time at the crease the Firemen were bowled out for 128 thereby giving the JDF victory by an innings and 75 runs. The second innings destroyers were again Private Brown M who took three wickets to add to his five in the first innings for a man of the match performance of eight wickets for 44 and Private Johnson I who again took three wickets.
Buoyed by their victory in their first match the JDF took on Kingston and St. Andrew (KSA) again at Mico Ground. Batting first, KSA was bowled out just after lunch for 70 runs. Private Brown M again featured in the wicket- taking, captured 5 wickets for 15 runs from his 9.1 overs. He was ably assisted by skipper Private Ellington O who took 4 wickets for 7 runs from his 8 overs.
JDF in their reply score 170 runs all out. Main contributors were Ordinary Seaman Burke L with 40 and another quick-fire 47 from just 20 deliveries from Private Scott S; who is by now a prime candidate for any 20/20 team. Main wicket takes for KSA were Winston Walker with figures of 10.1-0-42-5 and Giddian Vernal with figures of 4-0-30-3.
KSA in their second time at the crease made 164 runs with major contribution from Christopher Flemming with 46 runs. The main wicket taker for the JDF was Private. Johnson I with figures of 19.2-3-70-8. With a mere 65 runs to win the JDF quickly achieved their target with the loss of just two wickets.
The team’s next game will be against their old rivals Kingston at Sabina Park and the men of the JDF intends to keep up the winning streak.
