Boxing
Boxing develops both fitness and character in its
officers and soldiers. The JDF Inter-Unit Boxing Competition is one of the most
anticipated events on our sporting calendar. It attracts a large audience both military
and civilian.
It is held annually in Lathbury Barracks, Up
Park Camp in the month of March over a two (02) day period. Eight (08) weight categories
are usually contested in the novice divisions only (feather to heavy weight).
All Units participate, however it is usually dominated by the infantry Units. Over the
years the JDF Boxing Team has produced some outstanding boxers who have represented the
country at international championships. The JDF Boxing Team last won the National
Championships in 1994.
Members of the JDF are currently playing an
important/invaluable role in the development of the sport at the National level by
providing coaches, referees, judges, doctors and medical orderlies as support staff. The
current president of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control, Jamaica, is a JDF officer.
