Training – Profiles

Name:          Pte Tyrone Barrett
Hometown:  Greater Portmore, St Catherine

”One aspect of training that has really captured my interest is a phase in tactics, learning how to use and apply camouflage so that the enemy cannot easily recognise you.  The aim of camouflaging is to blend in with the environment and your immediate surroundings.  In using twigs, for instance, it is important that you place it in an upward and not downward position.  It is harder to recognise or identify a person this way because this is not the normal appearance of leafy items hence you may become a target for the enemy opening fire.  The area I find most exciting is having to do instant crawl through barbed wire fencing then assuming the fire position and back to instant crawling again.”

“I never imagined wearing boots and being able to look at myself in the reflection .  Learning to "bull" my boots and prepare my kit is a very tedious task especially in the initial stage of training.  At some point you have to get it right or you might find yourself on numerous show parades (penalty).”

“Soldiering is not a one man show, team work and effort must be displayed at all times.  We rely on each other for strength, especially at those times when you feel you can’t make it.”

“What is training without a little fun to cool you down.”

“I look forward to that moment on December 15 when I can proudly stand and boldly say I am a soldier, trained and ready for the world.”

Pte Tyrone Barrett is now serving in 1JR as a rifleman.
