Q. How is an Officer employed in the Jamaica Defence Force?

A.

Generally, as a young officer you may be in command of a platoon of 30 men or a co-pilot of an aircraft or a Navigation Watch Keeper onboard one of Her Majesty’s Jamaican Ship.

At the rank of a Captain, you could be commanding an infantry company of more than 100 men, the Captain of an aircraft or the Captain of a ship.

At the rank of Major and above, you could be leading more than 500 men.

If you excel, we train you and develop your potential as far as it will go maybe until you are commanding the entire Force, or be principal Staff Officer of the rank of Colonel!

What are the options/skills training available for persons who do not join the JDF as an Officer?

It is understandable that not everyone will qualify for a Queen’s Commission, however, JDF still has rewarding and exciting careers are available for soldiers and Non-Commissioned Officers. If you demonstrate the interest and potential the JDF will train you as a soldier to work in one these trade areas:
