3JR (NR) CIVILIAN STAFF
HOSTED BY COMMANDING OFFICER
On 23 July 2004, the Commanding Officer Lt. Col. L P Gordon hosted seventeen
(17) members of the civilian staff of the Third Battalion Jamaica Regiment
(National Reserve) at lunch. Only one of the Eighteen (18) members of the
civilian staff was absent.
A three- course meal was provided and served by the Commanding Officer and
his Officers, who later joined in dining and sharing with the civilian
staff.
Having fared sumptuously, the civilian staff was addressed by Lt. Col.
Gordon. The Commanding Officer expressed his appreciation for the work being
done by the civilian staff as a whole, at Curphey Barracks. He told them
that they were not seen as lesser beings but as an integral part of the
Unit. The Commanding Officer urged the civilian staff to see themselves as
members of the “3JR family”. He also told them that he is very uncomfortable
with indiscipline, poor work ethics and incompetence.
The Commanding Officer advised the workers that they should ensure that
their children receive the best education possible. It is through education
and nothing else, the Commanding Officer told them, that he and his officers
became professionals and officers.
His parting words were filled with encouragement as he told the workers to
try their very best to provide their children with adequate opportunities.
This he said will ensure a better quality of life for them in the future.
Mrs. Sonia McPherson-Groves, Civilian Chief Clerk
who gave a response to the
Commanding Officer’s address, described the occasion as unprecedented and
most memorable. She expressed her sincere thanks to the Commanding Officer
for the recognition given to the civilian workers on the occasion. She said
it is hoped that the luncheon will be made an annual event.
