The main role of 1 Engineer Regiment (JDF) is to provide military engineering support to all units of the Force and assist or advise the Government or civil agencies as directed by the Headquarters JDF. To achieve these goals the unit performs the following functions:

  • Combat engineering support of all JDF units in military operations and training.

  • Planning, construction and maintenance of all JDF installations.

  • Assistance with the maintenance of technical essential services on a national basis, including the ongoing operation of the Jamaica Public Service Company Rockfort diesel station (power plant).

  • Emergency engineering assistance for Disaster Relief and Recovery.

  • Engineering assistance or advice to Government and civil agencies.

  • Military ceremonial and infantry roles as directed by the Force Headquarters.

History

The Engineer Regiment was formed in August 1991 and became fully operational on 01 April 1992. It was named 1 Engineer Regiment (Jamaica Defence Force). Prior to this period all military and civil engineering tasks were carried out by two sub-units under command of the Support and Services Battalion: the JDF Construction Squadron and the JDF Engineer Unit. An increase in national demand for military engineers led Headquarters JDF to seek and obtain the approval of the Government to form the Engineer Regiment.

Motto
The Engineers’ motto UBIQUE – TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL

UBIQUE (‘everywhere’) speaks of the engineering versatility of the unit. The phrase ‘Technical and Tactical’ indicates the ability of the technically skilled engineer also to function as an infanteer.

Organisation/Functions

The engineer functions are undertaken with a range of engineering equipment and machinery, including front end loaders, motor graders, backactors (back hoes), bulldozers, tipper trucks, forklifts, rollers and compressors. Other specialist engineer equipment includes items such as water purification kits and metal detectors.

Current Major Operations/Projects
