The Barbershop Project

It took the thorough planning of the Commanding Officer, Battalion Second-in-Command and other members of the 2nd Battalion The Jamaica Regiment to renovate the barbershop at the Moneague Training Camp, St Ann.   This facility is shared by soldiers of the Battalion, soldiers of the other Regular Infantry Battalion (1st Battalion The Jamaica Regiment), who rotate to Moneague annually, and other members of the Jamaica Defence Force who use the training camp.   The repairs would take some time and the barbershop had to be closed for over a month to facilitate its remodelling.

During the initial planning, Ex-Corporal Williams of the Unit heard about the project and offered to assist with  workmen and material from his company, Superior Drywall Construction Ltd, located in the parish.   Despite the help that Ex Corporal Williams gave, it was still an uphill task to finance the completion.

The remodelling of the Barbershop started on a rainy afternoon. Notwithstanding the inclement weather, Ex-Corporal Williams and his team worked enthusiastically alongside the Battalion Second-in-Command, Major Andrew Sewell, and the barbers, Corporal Delton Rodney, Privates Williams and Adams to start the project.

Success does not come easily as there are always obstacles in the way.   To achieve an aim there is always an obstacle to overcome.   The Barbershop was no exception.   Cash and material became limited on more than one occasion, but providence came to the project’s aid through the conscientious members of the Battalion who contributed additional cash and material to continue the project. Working concurrently, another team dedicated long hours to making the furniture for the Barbershop.    Those who provided their labour gained knowledge of dry wall construction technique and tiling.

Finally, the Barbershop was satisfactorily renovated with new tiles and furnishing.  A brief ceremony was held on 14 December 2005 immediately after the Christmas Men’s Dinner to celebrate the reopening of the Barbershop.   The Battalion was mustered and witnessed the cutting of the ribbon by  Ex-Cpl Williams and Corporal Rodney.

Other notable participants were the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Pryce; Major Sewell who acted as the Master of Ceremony; and the Force Chaplain, Major Sirrano Kitson, who blessed the proceedings.    Colonel Pryce presented a plaque to Ex-Cpl Williams.  Other guests included Colonel Audley Carter, Inspector General, and the Force Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class One Patrick Morris.

The newly renovated Barbershop stands as an edifice of pride and a reminder that success can be achieved through hard work, dedication and discipline.
