Introduction
Administration and logistics have been key factors in determining the outcome of battles.
Within the JDF, the Support and Services Battalion is the heart beat of the Force.
Although not usually committed for operations, the Battalion provides operational
assistance to the infantry battalions whenever the need arises and in its normal
functions, flexibility, like its motto ‘Serving to Support’ must be a watchword.
Organisation
The Support and Services Battalion was formed I 1973 from a small unit called the Garrison
Administrative Unit, and comprised the amalgamation of seven sub-units: JDF Workshop, JDF
Engineer unit, JDF Training Depot, JDF Sea Squadron, JDF Air Wing, JDF Medical Reception
Station and the Married Quarters Accommodation Stores. Subsequently the Air Wing and Coast
Guard (Sea Squadron) became autonomous units.
Currently, the Battalion has a strength of just over 20 officers and
600 other ranks, employed in six sub-units.

which deal mainly with clerical, dental, finance, medical, music, quartering and records.

Park Camp but forward repair teams are established at various military bases around
Jamaica.
JDF Supply Depot (JDF SD)
This sub-unit meets the needs for the JDF’s daily functions. It ordnance duties
include procuring items from ‘a pin to an anchor’, and storing, issuing and
accounting for vehicles, arms, ammunition and equipment.
JDF Training Depot (JDF
Trg Depot)
This sub-unit is the JDF’s
principal institution for recruit training. It is located at Newcastle Hill Station
(the camp established in 1841 to give British troops in Jamaica a change of air, so as to
combat the high death toll from the dreaded yellow fever disease).
JDF Provost Unit (JDF PU)
Discipline, a core-value of the JDF, is one of the responsibilities of this sub-unit. It
handles all Military Police matters including crime prevention and investigation, route
clearing, traffic control and camp security.
JDF Transport Unit (JDF
TU)
The JDF Transport Unit facilitates
road movement throughout the Force. In addition to providing transport, the unit
co-ordinates all driver-training and testing, and also supplements other units with
drivers and monitors transport when required.
