The year 2000 edition of the Alert Magazine marks a significant juncture in the history of the magazine and the Jamaica Defence Force. The magazine is published at a time when the world is ushering in a new Century. The implications of this change have caused us to analyse the impact we have made as a Force since our formation in 1962 and to determine whether a secure platform has been built from which we can launch confidently into the future. As we reflect on our 38-year history it is evident that the Force has evolved from small beginnings and has grown into an entity of international standing. Over the years the posture as a Force has been one of preparedness to perform our pre-eminent role of national defence and simultaneously meet the demands of our multiple roles at the domestic level. At the same time, as the situation dictates, we have readily deployed overseas for various peacekeeping and disaster relief operations. I believe the period behind us will be looked upon as a positive indicator of our operational preparedness and reliability to render high standard of performance in keeping with Government directives. The experiences of the Force indicate that military responses today call for joint and coalition force level responses and that these responses require disciplined, well-trained men and women who can work well with each other and with those whom we assist. It is only through continuous training that we will maintain the diverse capabilities within the various units to fulfil our defence and corporate responsibilities. It is our specialised training that has equipped us to perform, whether in a military or civilian mode, with the expertise and professionalism to which our citizenry have become accustomed. The increased demand for the services of the Jamaica Defence Force has placed this organization more and more into the public glare. As is wont to happen, we are harshly criticized when we err, and when we do well, it is taken for granted. Yet we should not resent criticism because we are accountable to the people and as such we ought to carry out our duties effectively and to the letter of the law. Members of the Jamaica Defence Force have a proud record in supporting nation-building efforts since Independence. However, far from resting on our laurels, it is imperative that each member of the Force be resolved to redouble his or her efforts in the years ahead. What we accomplish will depend on the amount of energy, determination and willpower or what we put into these efforts. Accepting challenges is a positive experience. Many challenges lie ahead. They may require traditional responses or demand bold, new initiatives. However, we cannot forget that the basic structures that have made us a professional force, if consistently applied, will enable us to successfully combat any threat that may confront us. This magazine will continue to act as a historical record of our activities. I continue to be impressed with the quality of the content and must extend heartiest congratulations to the planning and editorial committees and all those involved in the production process. I trust that it will not only serve as interesting leisure time reading but will be seen as an instrument to enlighten the public about our mission. In the end the Alert Magazine will serve best by fostering goodwill and understanding toward the Jamaica Defence Force.
