Ball Competition being held at

The Support and Services Battalion took a surprising but well deserved
victory in this year’s Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Inter Unit volleyball
competition. The Unit played against teams from the other major units of the
Force. The matches were held in Up Park Camp in August 2002.
Support and Services Battalion put forward the only team that had both male
and female players and made what could have been a minor difficulty, an
impossibility for the other male-dominated teams to be victorious, noted
Lieutenant Tamico Parkes, sportswriter for JDF Web Site.
The winning team consisted of very athletic sportsmen and women, and
throughout the competition their agility showed. According to Lieutenant
Parkes, the team maintained confidence and determination even when the odds
were against it. They faced the ‘giants’ of sporting events in the Jamaica
Defence Force, such as the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National
Reserve), who took a surprising third place. She also noted that they went
up against the Unit that says it is ‘Second to None’ (the Second Battalion
The Jamaica Regiment), yet placed second in the competition.
The surprising victory of Support and Services Battalion was well accepted
by the supporters from all units because it was felt by all that the victory
was well deserved, observed Lieutenant Parkes. She said that the performance
by the other competing units (JDF Air Wing, JDF Coast Guard, 1 Engineer
Regiment (JDF) and HQ JDF Intelligence Unit) was well above the standard
required, and the matches played all drew strong emotional responses from
the supporters. There were screams, shouts, sighs and moans. There were
those that grabbed their heads and those that had to look away because the
tension and anxiety was too much.
Lieutenant Parkes offers congratulations to Support and Services Battalion
for its outstanding performance as well as to the other competitors. She
noted that the high standard of the competition would not have been what it
was without the sterling performances given by all and as a result everyone
now looks forward to next year’s competition.
