JDF Officer receives Prestigious International Academic Award Jamaica Defence Force officer, Lieutenant Commander George S. Reynolds, carried the Jamaican flag high at the recent graduation of the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden, when he became the first ever recipient of the Chancellor’’ Award for Academic Excellence from that institution. Commander Reynolds, who successfully read for the Master of Science in Maritime Administration and Environmental Protection, graduated with a distinguished "A" average at the ceremony held in October 2000. It was the first time in the 17 year history of the WMU that the prestigious international award, which is given by the secretary general of the International Maritime Organisation, who is also the Chancellor of the University, was being conferred. Commander Reynolds distinguished himself ahead of the 195 graduates, from 45 countries, who completed their programmes of study at the University and graduated at the top of the Class of 2000. The World Maritime University located in Malmo, Sweden, is the premier institution for international maritime training, focussing on the enhancement of maritime safety, marine environmental protection, port and shipping management and maritime education and training. It was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organisation, a specialised agency of the United National dealing with international maritime matters, to train maritime specialist at the post-graduate level. |
