2004 State Funeral Honouring the Life of Former Jamaican Prime Minister The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) was the lead organization for the ceremonial activities associated with the State Funeral of the Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer, former Prime Minister of Jamaica. The service of thanksgiving for the former Prime Minister was held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, North Street and his interment at the National Heroes Circle, Kingston, on Sunday July 18, 2004. The Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer passed away on July 5, 2004 at the age 81. The State Funeral was a successful grand farewell. Following the funeral service, the Chief Staff published a message of congratulation to his Force on “a job well done” and granted 48-hour passes (time off) for all ranks, to be given at the discretion and convenience of their Commanding Officers. The JDF dominated most of the activities that added the pomp and pageantry to the levels becoming of a State Funeral. The demands of the occasion were smoothly met as all efforts were expended as a unified task involving the expertise of all the major units of the JDF. The JDF provided the Guard of Honour, Escorts, Keepers of the Ground, Street Liners, Special Security Party, Mourners Guides, Wreath Orderlies, Ushers, Vigil Party and Bearer Party. The Guard of Honour came from the 1st Battalion The Jamaica Regiment augmented with soldiers from the 3rd Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve). The Street Liners were furnished from the Support and Services Battalion and the JDF Air Wing. The Wreath Orderlies were provided by the JDF Coast Guard. The 2nd Battalion The Jamaica Regiment and the JDF Intelligence Unit in support of the Jamaica Constabulary Force carried out patrols and other security duties covering the funeral and the Keepers of the Ground were supplied from 1 Engineer Regiment (JDF). The ushers and the Vigil Party were drawn from all the units of the Force. The Vigil Party was made up officers of the Force. The Force Chaplain was also involved and performed services as one of the Officiating Clergy. The JDF’s Massed Bands joined with the other bands to provide the music for the funeral.

MASSED BANDS: The Massed Bands was furnished by the 1st Battalion The Jamaica Regiment, 2nd Battalion The Jamaica Regiment, 3rd Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve), Jamaica Military Band and Jamaica Regiment Band.
BEARER PARTY: The Bearer Party exits the church.
Captain (Retired) Lance Shearer, son of the decease (l) marched with the Bearer Party alongside the Gun Carriage bearing his father’s body.
CHIEF OF STAFF : The Chief of Staff (front) marched with the procession. To his rear is his Aide-de-Camp, Major Kirk Johnson.
WREATH ORDERLIES: The Wreath Orderlies, provided by the JDF Coast Guard.
NATIONAL FLAG:The Bearer Party ceremonially folded the National Flag having laid to rest the body of the late former Prime Minister.
