The Security forces began in the Corporate Area of Kingston and St. Andrew on Saturday, a month-long drive to take back the streets from armed robbers, gunmen, car-jackers and murderers.

Police sources told The Gleaner that the initiative began at 4 p.m. and that is it being directed from a command post on Lady Musgrave Road, St Andrew.

As The Gleaner understands it, the object is to flood the streets oftroubled inner-city communities with soldiers and police in such numbers and with such regularity as to keep the wrong-doers off balance.

The police and soldiers will be conducting searches, roadblocks, spot-checks, manning cordons and implementing curfews for the next 31 days.

At the end of the period the high command of the security forces will assess the effectiveness of their effort and decide where to go from there.

The decision to try this new strategy was taken on October 4 when Prime Minister Patterson met with Police Commissioner Francis Forbes, Major-General John Simmonds, Chief-of-Staff of the JDF, and their high commands.
