Warrant Officer Class One David Norman

 Regimental Sergeant Major Support and Services Battalion

Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) David Norman is the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Support and Services Battalion. He took up the appointment of RSM for this Unit in April 2002.  His first appointment as RSM was at the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment on his promotion to the Rank of WO1 in 1991.  He then went on to serve as RSM of the Regimental Headquarters, the Engineer Regiment and the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve) before taking up his latest assignment as the RSM of the Support and Services Battalion.

Born in Annotto Bay, St Mary, WO1 Norman attended the Annotto Bay Primary School.  He worked for four years before joining the JDF and was enlisted June 3, 1968. He completed his recruit training at the Newcastle Training Depot in September of that same year.

WO1 Norman has served in all units of the Force except the JDF Air Wing and Coast Guard.  After passing out from recruit training, he was posted to Delta Company in the First Battalion The Jamaica Regiment. He successfully completed his Potential and Junior Non Commissioned Officer Cadres and promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal in 1970 and 1971 respectively.  As a Corporal he was selected to be a Recruit Instructor at the Newcastle Training Depot in 1973.  During this period he also completed a Senior Non Commissioned Officer Cadre and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1974.  He remained in the Training Depot as a Platoon Sergeant until 1978.

Mr Norman was transferred back to the First Battalion as a Platoon Sergeant.  He was promoted a year later to the rank of Staff Sergeant.  In 1981 on promotion to WO2 he was appointed Unit Sergeant Major (USM).   He was later transferred back to the Support and Services Battalion in 1985 where he served for three years before returning to the infantry.

He has held several appointments such as Recruit Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Colour Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, Unit/Depot Sergeant Major (Newcastle Training Depot), and now Regimental Sergeant Major.

WO1 Norman has successfully completed a Recruit Instructor Course at the School of Infantry, Warminster and a Drill Course at the All Arms Drill Wing, Pirbright.  He also completed a RSM course at the Moneague Training Camp and a professional course in Supervisory Management.

The RSM has participated in the Trooping of the Colours Parade on Her Majesty’s visit to Jamaica in 1993 and was the RSM on parade for the Chief of Staff Change of Command Parade in 1998.

WO1 Norman is a recipient of the General Service Medal award for service in Grenada, 1983; Long Service and Good Conduct Award, 1988; and the Meritorious Service Award in 1995.

During his service in the JDF, the RSM was sent to Antigua as an advisor for the country’s first state funeral held for the late Vere Bird, a former Prime Minister.

He is married to Rosemarie for the past 32 years and has three children, Karen, Dwight, Euland and Granddaughter Rheanna He also enjoys reading and sports.
