Master Chief Petty Officer
Class 1 (MCPO1) Glenford Morgan is the Regulating Master Chief Petty
Officer (Reg Chief) of the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard (JDF CG). Born
in Soho, St Thomas, he enlisted in the Jamaica Defence Force in October
1970.
He served in the 1st
Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (1JR) for most of his career. He
held several appointments in the Mortar, Support and LMG Platoons of the
Support Company. Since 1982, he has been an authorized
driver for trucks, trailers and the V150 armoured vehicle. He also
served as Company Sergeant Major for four different companies. Between
1993-1994, he held the appointment of Regimental Quartermaster Stores.
Another key appoinment held was that of Permanent Staff Instructor (PSI) for
the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserves) from 1994-1995.
Master Chief Morgan is a
recipient of the Service Medal (1986), which he obtained by serving as the
Quartermaster for the JDF contingent during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada
in 1985. He is also a recipient of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
(1989) to which he received the 1st and 2nd bars in
1995 and 2001 respectively. In 1998, the Master Chief was presented with
the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service.
His local courses include
the Potential Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCOs), Junior NCOs, Senior NCOs,
Mortar, Driving and V150 cadres. He also did the United States Special
Forces Anti-Terrorism course in 1980; Sergeant Majors’ course in 1989;
Supervisory Management and Training Techniques course in 1992. He was
awarded certificates by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland Ministry of Defence for successfully completing the Advanced Drill
Instructor course in 1990 and the Junior NCOs’ Skills at Arms course in
1997. He attended the Mortar Firing courses held by the Puerto Rico
National Guards in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
His was promoted over the
years to Lance Corporal in 1973, Corporal in 1975, Sergeant in 1979 and
Staff Sergeant in 1984. He received his Warrant in August 1989 when he was
promoted to Warrant Officer (Class 2). He was promoted to Warrant Officer
(Class 1) prior to being posted to the JDF CG on 17 Nov 1995. He later
adopted the naval equivalent to this rank – Master Chief Petty Officer
(Class 1).
As the Regulating Chief of
the JDF CG, he is responsible for planning the sailors’ duties and training;
also for the discipline and bearing of the Unit. He is known to treat his
soldiers well as described by his comments “I have tried my best to solve
soldiers’ problems in a way to benefit both them and the Force.”
Apart from his substantive
duties, he has held mess appointments in 1JR and the JDF CG. He was the
president of the Extra Messing, Entertainment and Mess Committees at various
times at 1JR. Currently, he is the President of the Mess Committee at the
JDF CG.
His special interests
include playing cricket and watching football, volleyball and boxing. He is
married and has four children.
