JDF Netballers Exhibit

Not even the bad weather could stop the Jamaica Defence Force Netballers from showcasing their skills on Wednesday 12 August 2009 at the Lathbury Barracks Netball Court, Up Park Camp, Kingston, as the Units competed in the Force Netball Championships.

The ladies participating for their respective units turned out in their creative attire to perform for all present and earn the right to be crowned champions. Not to be missed was the introduction of the JDF civilian team into the competitions clad in black and gold.

The day’s event got under way with a ‘Dress Parade’ which was truly a competitive affair leaving the judges with no other option but to focus on very miniscule details which set some competitors apart.  Having done that, the JDF Air Wing was too impeccable to be overlooked and copped the title, Best Dressed.

After the hour-long Dress Parade and the sun fighting its way to break the clouds, it was time for the teams to get down to the real business at hand, playing ball.

In a matter of minutes it was the Support and Services Battalion (Sp and Svcs Bn) who jump out in front to a five nil lead.  Their intentions were clear as they demolished the JDF Air Wing, 11 goals to 01 in the first game and setting the stage for what was to come.

After a couple of pulsating games it was time for the civilian team to show what they are made of, entering the competition for the first time; surely they were there to win.

At the end of their first game, however, reality stepped in and they realized that they would have to work very hard for every point.  They came from behind to level their game 4 goals each with the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve) team. The civilian team managed to secure 5th place, from eight teams, in the competitions.

As the games moved on, things got even more intense as another new team, Headquarters Jamaica Defence Force (HQ JDF) showed that they had what it takes to advance in the championships.  Blessed with some experience players one-by-one they overpowered their opponents.

After some dramatic games it came down to the big two in the finals, the Support and Services Battalion and Headquarter Jamaica Defence Force. In what was an entertaining finals, the Support and Services Battalion in a close encounter emerged winners with a 14 to 10 score card.
