History of the Jamaica Defence Force Technical Training Institute

1 Engineer Regiment (JDF) is a unit of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) which was formed on the 1st April 1992. Since the formation of the regiment, some of the artisan training was received through the HEART Trust/NTA to include the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI). Although this training partnership was effective and valuable, over the years, it became evident that it would be more cost effective for the Regiment/JDF to conduct some of its own artisan training, whilst still maintaining its partnership with the HEART Trust/NTA. From the Strategic Defence Review conducted in 2006, it was decided that there was a need to establish an artisan training school within the JDF to meet the trade requirements of 1 Engineer Regiment (JDF) and other units of the JDF as necessary.

The JDF TTI is located towards the east end of Up Park Camp on approximately 2.5 acres of land and first opened its doors for training on 14 January 2008, two years after it was conceptualized.  It commenced operations with forty eight (48) students and three (03) instructors. In November 2011, JDF TTI was granted the status of Accredited Training Organization (ATO) in the areas of General Construction and Electrical Installation and Welding and Fabrication Levels   1 -3 by the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET).
