Legal Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Anthony Cole, LLB, CLE

Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Anthony Cole is the senior legal officer for the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).  He has responsibility for all legal matters affecting the JDF and provides guidance in the drafting of contracts and Memoranda of Understanding. He also gives advice to both military and civilian staff. He has been in this appointment since May 2006.

Lt Col Cole was born on the 28 March 1963.  He attended the Pembroke Hall Primary School and Calabar High, where he completed sixth form.  Matriculated in the University of the West Indies (UWI), he studied Law at the Norman Manley Law School, Mona and Sir Hug Wood Law School at Cave Hill, Barbados.  After graduating from UWI in 1986 with his Law degree, he went on to read for his Certificate in Legal Education (CLE) and received his qualifying certificate in 1989.

In 1989, he began practicing as an attorney-at-law when he was appointed Clerk in the Kingston Criminal Courts and worked in this capacity until 1990. He was later appointed as Crown Counsel and gained much valuable experience at the criminal bay, prosecuting a number of landmark cases.  He served in this capacity until 1993, during which time he served as a member of the Entertainment and Fundraising Committee of the Legal Officer’s Staff Association.

In 1993, he resigned from the public bar, having been granted a Commission in the rank of Captain in the Jamaica Defence Force on 01 October 1993.  He was subsequently appointed Staff Officer for Plans and Special Projects (SOP & SP).  For several years he functioned in this capacity as the sole legal officer. Lt Col COLE was promoted to the rank of major on 01 October 1997 and to his present rank on 08 December 2008.

Lt Col Cole represented the JDF at several conferences and seminars, both locally and overseas, including 11th Commonwealth Law Conferences in Vancouver, Canada in August, 1996; Special Meeting of the Committee on Hemispheric Security on the Special security concerns of Small Island States in October, 1996; Legal Conference on Operational law in July, 2001 and the 23rd Annual General Meeting of Caribbean Association of law Libraries in July, 2008.

He has also represented the interests of the Force before the courts at various levels, participating in trials and Commissions of Inquiries.

Lt Col COLE was awarded the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service in 2006.

He likes to think of himself as a non-discriminatory sports fan being interested in all major sports and music.
